Green Day Hit #1 On Billboard’s Album Sales Chart, Reach #4 On The Top 200

This month saw Green Day releasing their latest album, Father of All…, to widespread acclaim. Now, Billboard’s numbers are in, and it looks like pop-punk's sovereign trio have once again taken the charts by storm.

The band’s 13th studio effort debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Album Sales chart and placed at #4 on the Top 200. And that’s not all: the album also went to #1 in the UK and Australia and #2 in Japan and Germany.

Green Day have charted well since the groundbreaking commercial explosion that was 1994’s Dookie, so fans have come to expect this level of success from the band. After all, this is actually their fourth #1 album in the UK, following 2004’s American Idiot, 2009’s 21st Century Breakdown and 2016’s Revolution Radio.

Father Of All... marks Green Day’s first release in four years, and earned them a 4K review from Kerrang!. But when Green Day started working on what would eventually become this album, it didn’t seem like it would become the success it is today. In fact, it didn’t seem like a record at all.

“The point was just to hang out and play music together – but hang out first,” Billie Joe Armstrong said of the album’s beginnings. “We got together and jammed, and it was noise. We did these long jam sessions and we put up lights and video all over the rooms, and it was just fun. It felt more like a happening than it did rehearsal. And I have to say, none of it really sounded good. It was just fun and we were making a mess. And I think with Green Day, the first thing that comes to mind with making a record is making a mess first.”

And Green Day’s 2020 is just getting started. The band is already working on new music. In a recent interview, Billie Joe revealed that Green Day have almost an album’s worth of new material.

“We have more songs,” Billie Joe said. “I’ve written, like, three or four since the first single [Father Of All…] came out [last September]. I mean, the way people are able to put out music now, we’re so stoked, because now we can just put stuff out anytime we want – we’re completely unstructured. So to put out a single here, or an EP there, or contribute something to what would eventually be an album… we don’t really know, but we’re into it. So hopefully maybe there’ll be even more music this summer. We’ll see what happens.”

That means Green Day might even put out new music just in time for the Hella Mega Tour with Fall Out Boy and Weezer this summer. The massive cross-country stadium tour kicks off in Europe in June, before hitting up the US in July and August and then heading to Australia and New Zealand in November.
