The big review: Damnation Festival 2024
What happened when Nails, Gatecreeper, Cradle Of Filth and a ton more brought the noise to Manchester for the biggest Damnation Festival yet.
The video for the new song by Canadian emo act Youth Fountain is a shaky-cam look into the past.
Though they're an up-and-coming act, Vancouver's Youth Fountain feel like a band out of your past. The emo duo's brand of hearts-on-their-sleeves punk rock feels so raw and young that one can't help but wonder if these dudes were peers of Taking Back Sunday and Saves The Day back in the early 2000s. This isn't incidental, either; the title of the band's upcoming new album is Letters To Our Former Selves, giving fans the immediate sense that they long for, or even worry about, the people they once were.
Youth Fountain's latest video for the track Ache ups the ante on that. The whole thing is recorded in shaky-cam home video style, and features a mix of the band playing out in front of a house and various footage of everyday sites from youth -- an airplane overhead, a family on an outing. It has the vibe of a home video you found in a box in the attic and watch with tears in your eyes.
"Our track Ache is the most barebones, stripped down songs on the album acts as an interlude/half way point on the record," says Youth Fountain's Tyler Zanon. "We decided to go out with an old DV camcorder and film some mundane, significant spots where we’re from - seemed to just vibe well with the overall tone of the single.
“The topics we wrote about on 'Ache' tend to sum up what the whole record is about - the ongoing struggle with mental illness for most of my adolescent life, finding a sense of relief through writing music and lyrics about those inner issues and attempting to burry those parts of who I’ve been.”
