Album review: Ocean Grove – ODDWORLD
Melbourne party-starters Ocean Grove get weird in both good ways and bad on album number four…
Curse Mackey, the vocalist of industrial act Pigface, is putting out his new solo album Instant Exorcism this Friday. Stream the whole thing now.
Curse Mackey is a jack-of-all-trades in the goth-industrial world: In addition to being the vocalist for Pigface and Evil Mothers, he’s also a periodic member of My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult, a respected DJ in the darkwave circuit, and even once filled in for Peter Murphy at a 40th-anniversary Bauhaus show. With that many projects in the world of all things dark, stylish, and danceable, it also stands to reason that his solo record Instant Exorcism, which is out this Friday, would be an excellent distillation of his talents: The album combines the twisted, dancey elements of industrial and the raw, melancholy emotion of post-punk into an amalgam which is perfect for both the dance floor and deep introspection.
“Instant Exorcism is quite dystopian in its attitude and thematic approach, and highly influenced by surrealistic art and literature,” Curse says. “I think we can all use an Instant Exorcism at times -- a ‘tabula rasa’ cleaning of the emotional mindset where we can clear our mental and emotional image, express how we feel, fight through the problems of the day so we may get to a higher plane of existence and clarity. The prevalent theme of the album is about transformation, both on a personal and cultural level. We exist in a very complex time on the verge of man and machine integrating into one towards singularity, and the songs reflect the chaos, information distortions, desires, societal and intimate challenges we all face in our day to day lives, from the demons of our past, as well as those that are sure to show themselves in the future. The album is deep and diverse in its shades of darkness and was created with the intent of live performance as the ideal listening experience. It took about a year to create the record and all of the original paintings that went into creating the album art. It is definitely one of those special works of a lifetime and I had a ton of fun making this record despite the periodic pain it inflicted on my psyche while making it. For me, it definitely was a creative exorcism to get these songs out of my soul and set free into the universe for others to enjoy.”
