Mad Cool reveal first names for 2025 including Weezer, Thirty Seconds To Mars and St. Vincent
Weezer and Thirty Seconds To Mars join the likes of Olivia Rodrigo, Iggy Pop and Noah Kahan atop next year’s Mad Cool Festival bill.
Rivers Cuomo says each one of this quartet of Weezer records would have a "different vibe and lyrical theme" in conjunction with the time of the year.
Seemingly not content with releasing two albums this year (the wonderful, recently-unveiled OK Human, and Van Weezer in May), Rivers Cuomo has revealed that he has started work on a four-album set – with a very specific and interesting concept.
Speaking with Strombo on Apple Music Hits, the Weezer frontman says that he intends to create a "four-album set, where each album corresponds to one of the four seasons. And then each album has a very different vibe and lyrical theme."
Going into more detail about what this might entail, the musician says that a 'spring'-themed Weezer album could be "lighthearted" and "breezy", while an LP for the wintertime would "include lots of loss and despair and [be] kind of quiet", comparing it to Elliott Smith. Autumn, meanwhile, would be soundtracked by a "dance rock" sensibility, with Franz Ferdinand being an influence.

Of course, it remains to be seen how much time Rivers will have in 2021 to work on this four-album set; in late January, he revealed that Weezer's upcoming Hella Mega Tour with Green Day and Fall Out Boy in the summer was still going ahead as far as he was aware.
"My manager just told me yesterday that the U.S. promoter is still saying it’s gonna happen," he said of the huge stadium run, which kicks off in Vienna on June 9. "That could change, but I’m not making any other plans for the summer."
