It's been three months since Napalm Death's historic set headlining the Truth Stage as part of Earache Records' takeover of the Shangri-La area at Glastonbury on the Thursday of this year's festival. Their set marked the first time underground heavy music has been given any proper stage time at Glastonbury.
While you'd be right to associate Glastonbury with weekending yuppies and Ed Sheeran, a headline set for a band like Napalm Death is a return to the original ethos of the festival. Preaching environmentalism, anti-war/anti-capitalist sentiment, vegetarianism and speaking truth to power, Napalm playing reinforces the idea that a festival like Glastonbury isn't just a place for bankers to let their hair down once a year, that it can still be a place for big ideas, positive action and genuine alternative culture. In times like these, we need that sort of thing now more than ever.
This video of the set made it online last week, and if nothing else it'll remind you of two things as we head into autumn - the summer evening sunlight is a joy to behold and grindcore is great.
