The rise of You Me At Six, as told through their most important gigs
From scrappy early shows to taking over Warped Tour, Wembley and more, You Me At Six’s Josh Franceschi talks us through 10 of the band’s most stand-out gigs.
Co-written and produced by You Me At Six’s Max Helyer, VENUS GRRRLS’ new single Eighteen Crows came from a dark place for singer GK…
VENUS GRRRLS have unveiled a personal and powerful new single, Eighteen Crows.
The British punks – vocalist/guitarist GK, bassist Hannah Barraclough, guitarist Eliza Lee, synth player Grace Stubbings and drummer Gabby Cooke – teamed up with You Me At Six guitarist Max Helyer on co-writing and production duties for this one, bringing it to life following a bout of ill health for GK.
“More than anything, Eighteen Crows comes from a recurring fantasy I had while sick, where I wished not necessarily for death, but for a different life,” the singer explains. “I developed a real fascination with the crows that appeared outside the hospital windows, given the symmetry of my ill health and the association of crows with death, and longed to be one of them instead of myself. I loved the idea that by becoming a crow, I could let go from a body that ultimately had failed to become liberated in a form that had power and freedom in its physicality. This fantasy was a consolation for me during that time and made up many of my fever dreams in the small hours.”
Speaking about its sound, GK continues that, “We had lots of
discussions about the footprint we wanted to leave sonically; lots of Hole, PJ
Harvey and Garbage were channelled in that session. I think it’s the first time
since recovering from being ill that I felt grateful for the atrocity of it
all, because I knew that this song would never have existed had I not been ill.
Ironically a song about crows has proven to be symbolic of a rising phoenix for
myself and the girls, it’s deeply special to us.”
