Metallica Share 1989 Set Filmed On Lars Ulrich's Camcorder

Watch Metallica go "lo-fi bootleg style" for this week's stream, filmed on the last show of their 1989 Damaged Justice tour.

Metallica Share 1989 Set Filmed On Lars Ulrich's Camcorder

While Metallica's shows these days are wonderfully slick affairs, captured in pro-shot glory for fans to relive whenever they desire, this week's stream comes from the, er, significantly less high quality recording of… drummer Lars Ulrich's camcorder. Yes, really.

"This week we hit Irvine Meadows in September ’89, for the last U.S. show on the Damaged Justice run," the drummer writes on Instagram announcing the Metallica Mondays stream.

"Unlike the previous weeks, we’re goin’ lo-fi bootleg style this time… filmed by my buddy Otto Weyer on my state of the art for that time Hi-8 camcorder (!!!) in the wings. This will hopefully give you a nice intimate look of what was going on up onstage…"

Of course the footage is considerably more fuzzy than any gig filmed in the modern day, but Lars is right: this stream gives a truly intimate look at how the band put on a show from their perspective. It helps too that this setlist in particular is absolutely killer – featuring covers of Killing Joke's The Wait, Misfits' Last Caress, Budgie's Breadfan, and a rendition of Diamond Head's Am I Evil? with the band members switching instruments. Brilliant stuff.
