Album review: Halsey – The Great Impersonator
Halsey experiments and shapeshifts as she tells her most personal story yet on epic fifth album, The Great Impersonator
For her performance of Ego at last night’s VMAs, Halsey brought together their “dream ’90s garage rock band” including Måneskin bassist Victoria De Angelis, plus Jazzelle Zanaughtti and Maya Stepansky.
Fresh from the release of last week’s awesome, ’90s-inspired single Ego, Halsey is continuing to embrace that particular decade with a performance at the MTV Video Music Awards.
The New Jersey superstar assembled what they describe as “my dream ’90s garage rock band” for their VMAs show last night at the UBS Arena in New York, with Måneskin’s Victoria De Angelis coming in on bass, Jazzelle Zanaughtti on synths and Maya Stepansky on drums.
“Four dolls in a dollhouse,” Halsey wrote on Instagram afterwards. “I’m so proud of this whole performance and I built every detail of it myself because I was determined to go up there and have FUN. Awards shows have historically been so stressful for me that I’ve dreaded them, but tonight was like I was just playing with my friends at home.
“Thank you so much @vicdeangelis you are a dream and a superstar. @uglyworldwide for smashing that synth ur unreal and @mayastepansky for KILLING IT on drums. And @anthonyli for seeing this vision through, couldn’t have done it without you.”

Ego is taken from Halsey’s new album The Great Impersonator, which is due out on October 25.
