EP review: VOWER – apricity

Given the pedigree of its members, with alumni of Black Peaks, Palm Reader and Toska all present, it won’t come as a surprise to hear that VOWER are a very good band. The thing is, though, they aren’t just good: in the space for four songs and 17 minutes, the five-piece’s debut EP apricity announces them as one of UK metal’s most enthralling new outfits. This record is a shot in the arm for a scene already in very rude health.

Opening track Shroud kicks apricity off with some huge vocals courtesy of PR man Josh McKeown, who excels throughout this EP thanks to his flawless delivery. Doing exactly what it says on the tin, apricity’s first song is an all-consuming epic that shrouds the listener in sonic pandemonium. It’s riveting stuff that sets the stage for what follows.

Elsewhere, they take a more melodic approach on In The Wake Of Failure – a track which possesses a real emotional and empowering quality – while Eyes Of A Nihilist benefits from a slower pace and yet more brilliant vocal work. Sandwiched in between the two is False Rituals, managing to sound simultaneously vicious and massive, also showcasing the potency of their rhythm section. Across the board, the musicianship on apricity is excellent, testament to the talents of its creators who have all cut their teeth so successfully elsewhere.

A thrilling coming together of post-metal, prog and post-hardcore, apricity is a smart, densely packed metal release that’s also very accessible. And it’s one that suggests its already lauded members’ greatest achievements may yet lie ahead of them.
