Avril Lavigne’s pop-punk classic Sk8er Boi is going to be taken “to the next level”…
With Sk8er Boi turning 20 years old next year, Avril Lavigne has announced plans to turn the pop-punk staple into a movie.
The Canadian star recently shared how "stoked" she was about the current pop-punk revival, and with the scene's re-explosion and Avril's return to the genre, now is the perfect time to celebrate one of the biggest hits of the early ’00s.
“Recently with it being almost the 20th anniversary, a lot of people have been asking me to play this song on TV shows, so it keeps getting brought back up and people will always reference it to me,” Avril says on iHeartRadio's She Is The Voice podcast. “And so, I’m actually going to turn this song into a film and take it to the next level.”
Going into the inspiration for Sk8er Boi (and perhaps giving an indication about how the lyrics could translate on-screen), Avril continues: “You know what it was like in high school, you have all the different groups and cliques, and there’s like skaters, preps and jocks. It’s kind of like a missed opportunity at love.
“The skater boy is in love with the preppy girl and she’s too cool for him but then five years from now she’s feeding the baby and she’s all alone and she wishes she would have followed her heart and not tried to live up to society’s expectations.”

Last month, Avril reflected on the upcoming anniversary of her debut album Let Go (from which Sk8er Boi is taken): "I'm coming up on my 20th anniversary next year for my first album. So I've been doing this professionally for 20 years. Yeah. It's crazy. People come up to me and they're like, 'Oh my God, I grew up listening to you,' or, 'I started music because of you.' And it's super-humbling and it's really cool.
"And I'm stoked that pop-punk music, it's coming back around right now and people are falling back in love with it. And it's almost in a weird way, it feels bigger than ever right now."
