For metalcore stalwarts Norma Jean, striking the right tone with their new album All Hail is crucial. The record is the band's eighth full-length studio release, and involves new recording members -- all of which means that making sure the record appeals to Norma Jean's old-school fanbase while still getting across where they are today is especially important.

Entering New Jersey's Graphic Nature Audio to record the album, the band needed to know they were on the same page with producer Will Putney. Not only did they achieve that, but that sense of renewal gave the veteran producer something novel to work with.

"That collaborative process was really awesome," says Will in the latest episode of our Art Of The Record series, in which Kerrang! is given a look behind the scenes at Graphic Nature. "Every day, somebody in the band or myself has this sort of epiphany, and there’s a new idea. And it’s a refreshing process to make a record like that."

“[Will] understands the vibe, and he respects the message," says Norma Jean frontman Cory Brandan, "and wants it to get across in a way that’s powerful.”

For the almighty Norma Jean, those pivotal moments also came with a lot of hard work and experimentation. Part of that was breaking in new guitarist Grayson Stewart, who's only been with the band since 2018, and who respects the band and Will's strengths from both sides of the headphones.

“It’s still pretty surreal," said Grayson. "I’ve been listening to Will’s records for years as well, so this whole experience has been such a huge blessing for me.”
