The Underground Sounds Of America: Short Fictions
This eclectic Pittsburgh indie rock act are screaming for the future of our planet.
Exclusive: The latest from Pittsburgh indie-core quintet Short Fictions will have you nodding sagely along in no time.
The beauty of Short Fictions is that their music makes you feel like they know you. The Pittsburgh five-piece's plucky, honest indie rock has a sense of familiarity to it, like the background music to behind those very clumsy real-life moments you remember despite how banal they are. At the same time, their more frantic, aggressive moments keep their songs from coming off as trite or insistent, instead connecting with the emotionally-ragged hardcore kid we've all been at some point. The result is music that is comforting and sympathetic, even in its louder moments.
The band's latest single, Property Of Pigeons, distills that vibe in a big way. The track starts off melancholy and low-key, but peppers a few chugging accents in here and there. It builds with the kind of patient awareness that makes sense on long drives past rusted-out towns. Then it breaks into a crescendo of rattling noise rock that somehow retains its sentiment. The sample from It's A Wonderful Life that closes the song only further drives home the idea that it's a tune you know from your beautiful if troubled past.
Describing the track, vocalist/guitarist Sam Treber says, "A Short Fictions mainstay. One of those rare, magical songs that you could catch fans singing along to at shows, long before its release. With a tasteful blend of twinkling guitars and full-on blast beats, Property of Pigeons tactfully showcases the bands most emotional side."
