Liverpool nu-metallers Death Blooms get pissed off on savage EP, Fuck Everything…

EP review: Death Blooms – Fuck Everything

Death Blooms are a band who, as their name suggests, sound like Hell. Fuck Everything, the Liverpool natives’ third EP, picks right up where 2019’s You Are Filth left off, diving head-first into 15 minutes of unrelenting nu-metalcore ferocity that, while hardly subtle, demonstrates an uncompromising dedication to the sonic destruction through which they’re making their name.

The influence of Slipknot on this band’s sound is evident the moment riffy opening track Life Is Pain kicks-in. Frontman Paul Barrow’s vocals sound like they’re being screamed from the depths of the abyss as a barrage of chunky guitars usher in an apocalyptic sense of dread, but amongst all the aggression are moments of theatricality that elevate the music beyond a mere tribute to nu-metal’s big guns. That penchant for the dramatic is replicated in the unrelenting horror-metal of Gore, a three-minute-long dose of riotous insanity that finds Paul and his bandmates shouting about blood, guts and all manner of grisly delights.

They mix things up somewhat on Anger, which blends heavy-hitting verses with a melodic metalcore chorus and a vicious breakdown that lands hard. It’s a song that demonstrates the quartet’s musical dexterity, as they take a pretty standard metalcore formula and put their own spin on things. And even though Fuck Everything won’t be the most groundbreaking metal release of 2021, it’s a record in which its creators’ character and hell-raising identity are there for all to see.

For those after some modern nu-metal fun to which you can headbang along, or a band to soundtrack those moments when you want to tell the world to go fuck itself, Death Blooms more than tick the box. This band make being pissed off sound pretty great.

Verdict: 3/5
