The Deftones album is done, they're mixing it, and they're heading to Twitch...
Deftones have announced that, despite the COVID-19 crisis, their as-yet-unnamed ninth album is edging ever closer to completion. To wit: it's in the mixing stages, with the band having written and recorded the music last year with producer Terry Date, who worked on the band's first four records.
In a video shared on Instagram, drummer Abe Cunningham revealed that despite the logistical problems of mixing a record when you can't get together to hear it in the studio, "it's coming".
While you wait, the band are also going to be doing stuff on their Twitch channel, starting tonight with a session from Frank Delgado at 11pm EST (um, 4 o'clock tomorrow morning, if you're in the UK and stay up late/get up at the same time as farmers).
Speaking about the album at the end of last year, singer Chino Moreno revealed the band had taken a stress-free approach to writing, and had been taking their time in making sure everything was right.
“Our biggest thing is making sure that it’s good," he said. "We’ll be performing it, once it’s out, for the next two or three years, so we want to be sure it’s the best it can be and want to make everyone happy – including ourselves.
“We’re not doing that thing where we go in and lock ourselves in a room until it’s done; we are kind of enjoying our time making it. It’s been a cool process, we get together, we work for a couple weeks, whether that’s just making noise and coming up with ideas and then everybody just goes home and comes back to work on ’em a little bit more. So, we’ve been doing that for a little over a year or so.
“[Last] summer, we actually went into the studio and recorded an album’s worth of music. So, the music was pretty much done and the last few months have sort of just been working on the lyrics and the melodies and the singing parts. So that’s pretty much where we’re at right now.”
