Danny Carey Hopes That Tool Will Record An EP During Lockdown

Tool drummer Danny Carey says the band are "kind of on hiatus" right now – but he's hoping they will regroup this year to "knock out another EP".

Danny Carey Hopes That Tool Will Record An EP During Lockdown

At the start of lockdown, Tool drummer Danny Carey had expressed the idea that he might get together with bassist Justin Chancellor and guitarist Adam Jones to work on an EP together – and though we are now several months on from those comments and nothing's seemingly happened, the sticksman isn't ruling it out just yet.

Despite stating that Tool are "kind of on hiatus" at the moment with their huge year of planned touring obviously completely up in the air, Danny says that, with things likely not getting back to any form of normality until 2021, they need to kick back into gear.

"Tool hasn’t been jamming," he tells Skinny Puppy‘s cEvin Key. "We’ve been just kind on hiatus. Nothing’s really been happening. But I think it’s time. We kept hoping that we were gonna get back out, so we were just kind of, ‘Hey, enjoy this while it lasts,’ but now it’s looking like it could go to the rest of the year, so we need to get the lead out and start functioning – maybe knock out another EP, at least, or something like that.

Danny adds that Tool are now without a record label and can therefore do as they please: "We’ve never really done that since our first release – done an EP – so I thought it would be kind of nice to do something like that. We don’t have a record deal anymore – we’re free agents – so we can kind of release whatever we wanna release now, which is a good feeling."

Back in May, Justin said that he had "written some interesting riffs which will be reserved for Tool", so fingers crossed the group can get together – even if it's just remotely – and start working on some new music for us.
