London-based industrial noise-botherers Tayne unleash visceral, highly-anticipated debut
Calling your debut album Love is merely one sign of the dauntless nature that underpins Tayne. Quite possibly named after the Polynesian God Of The Sky, the London-based industrial trio have raised eyebrows with their impressive blend of spaced-out shoegaze, pulverising industrial riffs and dark alt. pop flavours. There’s a godlike feel about their whole aura – and their debut album bottles that in a fully-fledged listening experience.
Deservedly earning a spot on the K! Sound Of 2025 list, things have been properly brewing for Tayne over the past six months, having initially released two EPs titled Coherent and Tense back in 2021. With Nine Inch Nails announcing a massive world tour and the shoegaze revival going from strength to strength, their debut LP couldn’t have arrived at a better time.
Although brooding opener Erased might be initially dressed up as New Order’s Blue Monday, the peppering of brutality that follows is quite the curtain-raiser. The HEALTH influence is clear on Down, arguably the highlight of the record, which feels like a descent into some sort of spiritual, animalistic ritual in the wee hours of the morning.
Cage Fight vocalist Rachel Aspe lends her hand to Coherent – which is a momentary foray into black metal that begs to be explored further. Meanwhile, James Spence of Rolo Tomassi features on Fear, an unsettling marching stomper with synth-pop sensibilities to its chorus (and is a far cry from any Rolo Tomassi song, moreover).
Though lyrics are difficult to unpick through the wall of sound, Love contends with existentialism, conflict and the rollercoaster of emotions which have been whirring around vocalist Matt Sutton’s mind. However, it’s through the overstimulating, ruthless instrumental moments on Love that these sentiments are vividly expressed – existing in their unbridled, most powerful form.
